Life can be as unpredictable as the weather in March. One day you’re tempted to break out your summer wardrobe and the next you’re grabbing your mittens and winter hat. But imagine you didn’t have the choice to put on an extra layer when the wind got chilly. Imagine you didn’t have the certainty of where your next meal came from…This was the unfortunate reality of Wednesday and Pugsley, two 5-month-old puppies who were recently abandoned on the side of the road, starved and cold with an uncertain future.
“They had 0% body fat when they came in”, Director of Animal Care, Nadine Dwinell commented. “There was nothing to keep them warm from the elements. We weren’t sure they would make it through the night”.
The two siblings are estimated to be around 5 months old but weigh roughly half of what they should at that age, with Pugsley at 15 lbs and Wednesday at only 10lbs. They have been closely monitored by a veterinarian along with SPCA staff, while our team immediately established a plan to help them gain weight safely.
“Right now, the biggest thing is keeping them warm and introducing a slow and steady re-feeding program” Dwinnell commented. “So far we are happy with their progress, but it will be a long road ahead”.
Although physically they are weak, their spirit is strong, and they continue to show us their fight for a new life. Despite their condition, they show their sweet personalities by constantly snuggling up with staff and greeting all who meet them with the classic puppy wiggles. These incredibly strong animals rely on us to support them, love them and show them what it means to be part of a family. They didn’t deserve what happened to them in the early weeks of their lives, but we can ensure that their future’s will offer warm beds and full dishes.
