Brant County SPCA working to address lack of accessible veterinary care in historically excluded community with support from PetSmart Charities of Canada The Brant County SPCA has received a grant of $60,000 from PetSmart Charities of Canada™ to address challenges in accessing veterinary care for pet owners living in Six Nations. Rising costs combined with geographical barriers have left many communities out of the veterinary care system altogether. This grant program supports innovative and culturally relevant veterinary programs focused on Indigenous communities, which have been historically excluded from veterinary care. Early in 2023, PetSmart Charities of Canada, the top funder of animal welfare in the country, announced an $18 million […]
Doug is reunited with Cheeco, Shyanne and Buddy When you meet Doug, you can see how much he loves his animals. It’s written all over his face. Doug’s dogs are his best friends – and they show their love for him with their constant tail-wagging and cuddles. Doug is one of our Pets for Life clients. He has three long-haired Chihuahuas; Shyanne and Cheeco are parents to Buddy. Through our Pets for Life program at Winston Court, an affordable housing complex in Brantford, our Wellness Clinic team was able to assess Doug’s dogs, and give them the care they needed. All three dogs were spayed and neutered and Cheeco’s ears were treated […]

Nobody wants to get that call. I had seen one of our foster pups, Willow, earlier in the day with our Vet. She had a funny tummy and was given medication but didn’t seem very sick. Then, later that night I started to get phone calls from other foster volunteers. A week earlier we had placed 12 mastiff mix puppies into foster homes. Their mama had an unexpected litter of 12 puppies and the owner had asked us for help in finding homes for her puppies. After talking to our foster volunteers, Billy and Harley, two of the 12 pups, were rushed to the emergency vet clinic. Billy tested positive […]

With mating season upon us for many species, our animal services team is receiving an influx of inquiries about potentially orphaned wildlife. There are a few crucial pieces of knowledge when it comes to respecting and taking care of the wildlife in our community. Not all who Wander are Orphaned One of the first assumptions when encountering a baby animal is that it has lost its mother and needs our assistance. Although a fair thought, it is important to know that mothers often leave their babies to forage for food. During this process, it can be assumed that they have been left for good. Be sure to wait and monitor […]
It’s about that time to fire up the barbeque and head to the back deck! With Victoria Day around the corner, there might be some fireworks coming too. Although wonderful to celebrate with our pets by our side, fireworks often cause panic rather than enjoyment for our furry friends. Check out our best advice to keep your pet comfortable this long weekend! Small Pets Your smaller, primarily indoor friends are likely to frighten easily from loud noises. If you’re worried about loud noises scaring your small pet, consider moving their cage to a quieter, more secluded place in your home (ie. the basement). Some animals burrow when frightened so be […]
